Creative writing is typically viewed as a discipline that does not include academic writing. Writing assignments such as poems, memoirs, or songs are some of the most frequent assignments creative writing teachers include in their curriculum. But what if I told you creative writing could be used to help your ELA student not only succeed but love literacy?
According to Tompkins(1982), creative writing helps students in the areas of:
- artistic expression
- to explore the functions and values of writing
- imagination
- critical thinking
- personal identity
- reading and writing
