The tomato is an encompassing term that represents the edible fruit of the plant 'Solanum lycopersicum'. Worldwide there are 10,000 varieties of tomatoes that are used in all different types of cuisines. In Minnesota the most common types of tomatoes are the Early Girl, Big Beef, and the Cherry tomato. They each have a unique flavor and texture that can be applied to a wide array of dishes or even be tasted while being eaten fresh off the vine.
Mid July-September is peak tomato harvesting season in Minnesota, which is the fourth highest producing tomato state and produces over 10 million pounds of tomatoes. What variety of tomato will you try this year?
