The Tarantasio Agricultural Garden: Master Planning a Solidarity Landscape | August 17-24
Goals
Outline a vision for a landscape physically and conceptually linking two charitable organizations in neighboring towns, Consorzio FA/Villaggio Solidale in Lurano and FIEB/Corte dei Massari in neighboring Castel Cerreto
This workshop endeavored to build on peoples’ current experiences in the landscape and their hidden ambitions and help connect stakeholders and their environments. Through participatory activities, the research team began to co-create a vision for a pedestrian—and bike-friendly trail linking the communities to selected agricultural, ecological, solidarity, and heritage sites. The idea for the Tarantasio Trail was born
Participatory Activities
The meditation activity included a script that had participatants place themselves in their favorite landscapes and explore the feelings they associate with those places. After the meditation exercise, participants drew their own landscape of the heart. Contents of the drawings were divided into categories for analysis: emotional attachment, environment, and community. Results illustrate the importance and level of attachment the participants feel toward different aspects of the landscape.
The participants were divided into four smaller groups and were given 30 minutes to draw on 4 maps that displayed different areas of Villaggio Solidale. Contents of the collaborative maps were divided into categories for analysis: emotional attachment, environment, and community. The results illustrate the desires and changes the participants want to see for the landsacpe they live in.
Inspired by their research, the team decided to use the story of the mythical dragon of Lake Gerundo, Tarantasio, as a prototype of a larger Tarantasio Bike Trail and Ecological Zone in the region. The residents of Villaggio Solidale worked with the researchers to build, paint and plant the dragon. Each year, the residents re-plant the dragon with the researchers.
