PAR Process
The Solidarity Landscape Living Lab is grounded in Partipatory Action Research methods
Co-Creation is a collaborative act in partnership between experts and civil society (Fetzer & Ruggeri (2019)
Activities such as co-design, brainstorming, solidarity mapping, seed bomb making, collage creation, and solar pressing help us understand community needs and form relationships with members.
“An early physical representation of your idea that allows people to explore its technical and social feasibility” (Anna Szilagy, 2023).
Prototypes are a way to physically test an idea or concept. As a way to test the community’s desire and ability to maintain the larger Tarantasio Agricultural Garden, we built a small Tarantasio Vertical garden with the Villaggio Solidale residents.
To understand the uniqueness of the place and it's people (Fetzer & Rugger, 2019)
Each year, the team has many opportunities to engage with the community. Time is spent listening, taking notes, and writing recollections about interactions, lectures, meetings, and conversations during meals and activities.
Deep listening to "gain a view" from the inside (Ruggeri, 2006).
While the team passively observes during time spent in Villaggio Solidale and in the landscape, we mainly participate in interactive observations during our visits with various community groups and partners.
OUR ITERATIVE ACTION RESEARCH PROCESS
Our Participatory Action Research (PAR) process has been structured into iterative sequences of 1) reflection, 2) planning/design, and 3) action involving student researchers, local residents, activists, social workers, design and planning experts, local politicians and the general public. The iterative process has allowed us to integrate knowledge and research as our understanding of the people/environment relationship evolved, and helped refine opur strategies and design actions.
This diagram shows the first three years of the Solidarity Landscape, the milestones for each year, and the sequence of participatory activities of the Living Lab.
