Assistantships (GRA, GTA, GTA-PI)

The Faculty of Education cannot guarantee financial assistance to all students; however, we are able to offer some graduate teaching assistantships on a competitive basis to full-time students. Graduate assistantship opportunities and expressions of interest will be distributed via email. Decisions are based on the needs of the program areas (e.g., principal instructors), needs of the students (e.g., course load, program, year of the program), and student qualifications (e.g., teaching certificate and experience, subject area background) and demand on resources.
Hours of Work
  • Full-time graduate students cannot exceed 12 hours per week (average)
  • Part-time graduate students cannot exceed 6 hours per week (average)

Time Use Guidelines
Every graduate student is required to complete and submit a time-use guidelines form for every appointment, as stated in Articles 8 and 9 of the GSA Collective Agreement.

Bursaries & Emergency Funding

There are various forms of financial support designed to assist students experiencing financial shortfall for the current school year's academic and basic living costs or a temporary unexpected financial emergency during the academic year.

Scholarships & Awards

A range of scholarships and awards are available to graduate students in the Faculty of Education. Specific details about applying for scholarships, including application requirements and deadlines, will be circulated to graduate students via email.

Please be aware that many awards from FGSR have a faculty internal deadline and you will not apply directly unless otherwise noted.

Travel awards and grants provide financial support to graduate students who are travelling in the interest of disseminating their research results or developing their research. Some awards also support online or virtual conferences.

Tuition & Fees

Graduate program fees are calculated based on your program of study (i.e., course-based, thesis-based) and according to your year of admission. You can learn more about how fees are assessed online by visiting the FGSR Tuition and Fees page. Students can view their official fee assessments on BearTracks, under Financials. Fees must be paid by the fee payment deadlines outlined in the University Calendar & the Academic Schedule.

Tuition Framework for International Students

If you are an international student admitted to a graduate program in Fall 2020 or thereafter, your tuition will be calculated using a program-based model. In this model, tuition is assessed based on an annual and total program tuition guarantee. This guarantee means the total cost of program tuition will be calculated based on the number of credits required to complete the program
Tuition Guarantee LetterAccepted students will receive a Tuition Guarantee Letter, which will provide a guaranteed annual rate which international students will be assessed each year. The tuition guarantee only applies to the courses required to complete your program. It does not include any mandatory non-instructional fees or other costs such as the U-Pass, textbooks, residence fees, student association fees, etc. The letter will also provide a minimum required payment and maximum total for which the guaranteed annual rate will be in effect.
Doctoral StudentsFGSR's Minimum Registration Requirement states that Doctoral students must pay the equivalent of at least three full years of program fees during their program. FGSR also outlines that all of the doctoral program requirements, including dissertation defense, be met within a six-year period. If a doctoral student exceeds six years and requires an extension, the guaranteed annual rate will be re-calculated for subsequent years. Therefore:
    • Guaranteed Annual Rate X 3 = Minimum Required Payment
    • Guaranteed Annual Rate X 6 = Maximum Total
