Doctoral Candidacy Examination
Students are required to give a 20 to 25-minute presentation of their proposed research.
The purpose of the candidacy presentation is to provide an opportunity for PhD students to formally present their research proposal to peers and faculty members to develop their thinking, receive feedback, respond to questions, and prepare for the candidacy exam.
The candidacy presentation should usually be scheduled at least one week before the exam. The Graduate Program Administrator will schedule this candidacy presentation and email notice to faculty members and students with the date and time of the presentation.
Before the presentation, the student must submit an electronic abstract (300 words max) to the Graduate Administrator. The abstract will be sent to all Faculty members and current students, generally at the same time as the notice of the presentation.
In some instances (e.g. confidentiality, sensitive content), the student and supervisor may request an exception from the Graduate Coordinator to only share the abstract (using the approved form). In case of an appeal, the Chair of the Department will make the final decision.
