Who was your community partner, and can you describe the project objectives?
My community partner was Youth Unlimited. Youth Unlimited is an organization dedicated to supporting youth aged 12 to 18 in the Edmonton area. Their mission is to help young individuals explore their potential and discover hope by offering holistic care, mentoring relationships, safe communities and opportunities. They believe all youth deserve to be heard, valued and supported in a judgement free space where volunteers and workers can build meaningful relationships with students.
What was the biggest takeaway from your CSL placement?
My biggest takeaway from this placement was the meaningful relationships we built and the personal growth I experienced. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed connecting with students through participating in conversations, games and artistic expression that I normally wouldn’t do on my own but turned out to be extremely refreshing. I’ve learned a lot about myself and it has inspired me to be a more attentive listener and a strong advocate for youth.
How can you apply any newly gained knowledge/skills to your future endeavours (courses/employment/volunteering)?
Active listening is the most important skill i’ve been striving to develop though my volunteer work. I’ve learned that although I may not have a solution to someone’s problem, often times the most valuable thing I can offer is a safe space for someone to feel heard and appreciated. This skill in particular is extremely transferable to all future endeavours, as it makes me a better student, employee and friend. Being able to genuinely listen and be compassionate fosters trust, stronger relationships and a more inclusive community.
Why should students consider being involved with CSL, and how does it enhance their academic learning?
The courses that have had CSL components have been the most unique and fun classes I’ve taken throughout my university career. Stepping outside traditional learning and gaining hands on experience has been a rewarding opportunity to connect with the community, make unforgettable memories and become a mentor and leader.
