Who was your community partner, and can you describe the project objectives?
Campus Food Bank, we went through their campaign messaging and aimed to make the message clear through its wording and intent behind those words
What was the biggest takeaway from your CSL placement?
How important words/wording is and how its very important to be clear to get your message across. Also the campus food bank is an important asset to the university because it really helps students in need
How can you apply any newly gained knowledge/skills to your future endeavours (courses/employment/volunteering)?
We can apply this new-found knowledge in being clear and concise with our phrasing in many settings, like schoolwork, job opportunities, etc. working with the food bank also showed us how important it is to be empathetic with other people, but to also not treat them very differently due to their situation because it can feel ostracizing at times.
Why should students consider being involved with CSL, and how does it enhance their academic learning?
it gives students a hands-on learning opportunity that can really help kids learn in a new way. along with volunteering helping out their community and helps build connections in said community.
During your CSL placement, can you share the knowledge and skills you developed in relation to climate change mitigation or sustainability activities?
We learned how big of a deal food insecurity can be, and how many people won't accept help due to their pride, and its important to work to change that mindset.
How did you and your community partner meet project objectives that were aligned with environmentally conscious goals?
We made sure the campaign messaging didn't infantilize people who needed to use the food bank services by being sure to not convey the food bank as a place that would judge people for coming, but an opening and welcoming judgement-free zone.
In partnership with the Business + Higher Education Roundtable (BHER), and with support from the Government of Canada, CSL provides financial support to environmentally-focused community partners for their educational and mentoring roles with CSL students.
