Who was your community partner, and can you describe the project objectives?
My community partner was Braided Journeys. The project was focused on providing tutoring and academic supports to Indigenous students within Edmonton Catholic Schools.
What was the biggest takeaway from your CSL placement?
My biggest takeaway was gaining first hand knowledge into the ways that systemic barriers affect Indigenous students, and seeing how well placed support can create positive change. Braided Journeys works to create a space where Indigenous students can feel successful, access support and see themselves represented, a much needed step in addressing many of the issues faced by these students. It was amazing to see how the students would light up during their weekly drumming circle, or get excited about the beautiful ribbon shirts that the Braided Journeys facilitator made for them. On the last day in my placement, a student that I had worked with on a project told me that she was now passing her course, she was so proud of her hard work, and I felt so blessed to have been able to help her.
How can you apply any newly gained knowledge/skills to your future endeavours (courses/employment/volunteering)?
My placement with Braided Journeys helped me to gain confidence in my communication abilities, as well as working with and learning more about Indigenous communities and youth. When I graduate I hope to work with non profits, or other community focused organizations, and I feel that this placement gave me some valuable experience that would be transferrable to these settings.
Why should students consider being involved with CSL, and how does it enhance their academic learning?
CSL courses are unlike any other courses I have taken. If you value making a difference in the lives of others, or want to learn more about yourself, then I highly encourage you to take a CSL class. The experiential component is unique in that it allows theory to be put into practice. Reading that some individuals or communities face barriers is a lot different to witnessing these issues first hand, and it can be both a humbling and a rewarding experience. Taking a CSL course will add depth as well transferrable skills to your student experience and your resume.
How has receiving the Student Equity Award been a supportive avenue for you?
The CSL Student Equity Award was very helpful because it took some of the financial pressure away and allowed me to focus more on my studies.
