Who was your community partner, and can you describe the project objectives?
My placement was with Braided Journeys. It focused on the literacy needs of indigenous students and I tutored them in English and helped with grammar, comprehension, spelling and reading. Literacy is an essential aspect of one’s future and there’s a lot of barriers that influence access to literacy help and tutoring. Braided Journeys created a safe space for students to seek help and feel seen and heard
What was the biggest takeaway from your CSL placement?
Braided Journeys reinforced the importance of a positive environment when working with people. A secure and welcoming environment is a vital aspect for those seeking help. It also allowed me to build transferable skills and alter my communication ways to fit the diverse needs of others
How can you apply any newly gained knowledge/skills to your future endeavours (courses/employment/volunteering)?
My stronger communication and adaption can be a vital skill to apply to future employment and volunteering, specifically when working with youth. I’ve developed transferable skills which allow me to connect with diverse individuals and be a safe space for them to express their needs and concerns
Why should students consider being involved with CSL, and how does it enhance their academic learning?
My involvement with CSL has been nothing short of perfect. It has exposed me to various organizations where I am not only able to learn more about the community, but am also able to apply my knowledge to help resolve issues. My placements have enhanced my academic learning by showing me first hand what it’s like working with a community. I am able to apply placement knowledge into my academics and vice versa
