My exhibition focuses on displaying the theme of unpleasant truth of society that is expressed through the variations of visuals based on several common social issues. Each piece represents a certain social issue, with artwork number 1 having to discuss about women’s sexual abuse, artwork number 2 discuss the issue of how its like living under society’s expectations. Artwork 3 is connected with artwork 2 as to what society expects in contrast to one’s longing desire, whereas artwork 4 discusses the issue of poverty. Issues like these are still often experienced in Indonesia. Especially the issue of poverty, that is still closely related to the inability of some part of the community to pay for their lives. This is what causes the quality of natural resources to worsen and productivity decrease, and this is why the income they earn is low. Furthermore, due to the lack of income that they've received, it causes them to be unable to get proper education, health and nutrition. In addition to that, the issue of the corona virus that is currently spreading causes Indonesia's poverty population to increase. And this is what inspired me to choose this theme that focuses on emotional feelings from another person’s perspective that’s experiencing these social issues. Artwork 1 shows that gender equality still exists, as women are often looked down on. There are many men who treat women unfairly and because of the high appetence of men, they make women as their sexual objects in order to fulfill their own needs. Artwork 2 is how society’s expectation has led people to feel pressured on how society portrays them and as such make people have low self-esteem. Artwork 3, in contrast to their longing desire, they want to live a life without considering society’s expectations ; which one’s are able to make a decision without being judged by others. Artwork 4 is how living under poverty limits them from getting the best education, health services and quality of food. I used several materials and techniques to create volume and certain texture to the art, and some have deeper intention to it. For instance the textured and mixed flowers in artwork 1 represents the women’s overwhelming emotion as she feels angry, sad and confused. While the dripping blood in artwork 4 represents their blood, sweat and tears that they’ve gone through. And artwork 3 on how the wings symbolizes freedom while the heart represents the soul and joy that they feel. There isn’t any specific reason for how my artwork is arranged as they are separated with different social issues, although artwork 2 and 3 are placed alongside each other as they contrast with one another. I was inspired by Raden Adjeng Kartini or known as Ibu Kartini, who is known to be Indonesia’s National Hero, a pioneer who stands up for women rights and education for girls.
