Meet The Artist on :
My exhibition expresses the central theme of “adolescence” through displaying visualization of personal narratives by use of various medias. The pieces curated are chosen carefully in an effort to tell a story as each piece are a representation of personal hardships I experience during my adolescent stage. The theme of adolescence encompasses the convoluted mental state of a fledgling as one turns from being a kid to an adult. The adolescent stage which exists awkwardly between adulthood and youth presents adversity as it’s the stage of which expectations and pressure for independence caves. Adolescence as the base of my artworks serves as a medium for storytelling as the adolescence stage is the most confusing and impactful stage of my life.
Following the theme of adolescence, the first artwork, erasure, depicts my earliest phase of adolescence which is self-hatred, as I turn to self-deprecation in moments of change. The following artwork, In Progress, is a continuation of erasure which depicts deflection as procrastination grows proportionately to increased responsibility. Parallel to In progress, the third artwork, Halcyon Days, shows how self-hatred and deflection piles up to regression in which one rejects maturity and clings to childhood. Lastly, Washed Up, depicts the forlorn and submission to fate as one rides the wave of pressure.
Each artwork usage of media is different as different media evoke different emotion. For the initial artwork, Erasure, digital media is used as it is smoother and much more visible for creating text thus allowing the messages to be processed clearer. The second artwork, In Progress, uses mixed media of pen and yarn on paper as I wanted to create a much more cartoonist yet dimensional work via illustration. The third artwork, Euphoric, however, applies pastels as I wanted to implicate fondness of memory or longing, by creating a blurred and impressionistic style. Finally, the fourth artwork, washed up inquires the use of acrylic on canvas I wanted to create a textured work in order to animate the vividness of waves and bolden its impact.

Self-deprecation is suffocating, the struggles of adolescence isn't only caused by others, but one's self. The words that we say to ourselves that is unheard by others accumulate and leaves us all but empty shells of what we're capable of. This inner dilemma is a constant in adolescents as they face turbulent times. Erasure is a self-portrait which makes use of blending and transparency to show how detrimental these actions are as hateful words emboldens and erases one's worth creating a sense of distance.

With age comes new challenges and responsibility, turning over a new leaf and bearing new found pressures aren't easy. In progress depicts the process of deflecting in the process to adulthood as one repeats the cycle of laying waste time for momentary gains and vices. The repetition of procrastinating giving born to habits that can't be overturned. As the cycle of day and night is repeated, the burden increases and yet the cycle of procrastination is only harder to break, imprisoning one from progressing.

Reminiscing of the past, those fleeting moments of relief, escapism. Halcyon days shows another form of deflecting, regression, as one finds relief in childhood and clings to the bliss of ignorance. However, the wheels keeps on turning and those that can't balance are thrown off-course, left behind. Halcyon days are haunting as a child has less burdens and still lives with bright eyed innocence looking at the world with rose-colored glasses tinted with warmth.

Washed up depicts how one's mentality changes through adolescence in face of numerous hardships. The acceptance of fate as one embraces the pressures of growing up and following expectations. The figure which washes up is merely a doll, one created to follow others will. As the will to fight is washed away by others, leaving only remnants of former desires. The contrast as waves crashes and tides remain unchanged. In reference, in the process of growing up letting go of one's dreams and choosing convenience is common occurrence and such reality is mirrored in this artwork.
