In this project we are going to be journalists, but not traditional newspaper journalists, but BBC News presenters and correspondents in a foreign country. However, you will also need the help of other journalists who take part in a news programme.
Warming up: Let’s start!
Have a look at the following headlines. Comment on groups and decide if they are true or false:
He had a heart attack due to the intense period of gaming.
It means each state will lose more than 3 billion euros each semester.
The parcel had gone from Wuhan to Stockohlm.
It flew away and lived with Spanish speakers for one year.
He spent eight hours in a sitting chair.
Every time a person shared her picture by Whatsapp, she received one euro.
They were on a strike in New Mexico when they saw the dogs.
Users will have to pay 1,25 euros a year to use this popular app starting in June.
Making a news programme requires the work of many people, and the coordination of all of them. Therefore, the first thing to do is to assign different roles and responsibilities to the group according to their specialization:
presenter: Speaking in public or on camera is not always easy! That's why presenters and correspondents should practice and do some theatre, public speaking and training exercises so that on the day of the recording they are ready!
correspondent: The news will be written by the editorial team. In any case, as we all want to be involved in the production of the news programme, we will all choose which news items we will report (Stage 3 of the process). The editorial team will be in charge of how the news will be told (Stage 4 of the process).
news editor: will be in charge of recording and preparing the images (3 students): When we have the news and reports, the camera team will be in charge of seeing how and from where they will record, how we will adjust the lights, the colours, the images, etc. This is all part of Phase 6.
production, editing and sound: This work, which corresponds to one of the last phases of the process, is a very complicated task. Together with the help of the teachers and what we have learned in ICT, with the help of the Windows Movie Maker programme, we will carry out the task of editing the videos and preparing our news programme. Phase 7
coordination and direction: Throughout the whole process, the coordinators or directors, who will be voted for by all the students, will be in charge of reviewing and supervising everyone's work, sharing it, helping classmates, delegating work etc.
Task 2: What is a news programme? Structure and contents
In this task, we should ALL research and look for information about what a news programme is. Its origins, structure, content, etc.
Once we have completed this phase of the process, we should be able to answer questions such as:
How is a news programme structured?
Is the structure of a news programme specific to each channel or is it common to all of them?
How should information be transmitted in a news programme?
What news items are usually characteristic of news programmes?
What should the news be like?
How many "information areas" make up a news programme?
Which professionals make up a news programme?
In this task, we will share everything we have learnt about news programmes. This will be reflected in a part of the evaluation.
At this stage, we should all get together and select what news we want to tell.
Later on, it will be the editorial team who will be in charge of shaping the news, but first, we all have to move around the school, ask questions, get information, observe, select and determine what kind of news we are going to tell.
As you know, this does not happen in the news, but we are going to take advantage of the opportunity we have to choose what we want to tell.
Based on the structure of the news programme, we will have to choose the type of news:
General
Culture news
Sports
Events
At this stage, it is the editorial team that will do most of the work. Once we have the news we want to cover, the team of editors will be in charge of how we are going to cover it.
It is important to remember some concepts of how to write a periodic news item, as they will serve as a guide when writing and preparing our news (even bearing in mind that the format of the exposition or recipient will not be the same).
In task 3, we all decided where we would tell each story, whether it should be on location, whether it should be on set, etc.
Now it's up to the "camera team" and the production and decoration team to get down to work!
We have to prepare our set, decorate it, do lighting tests, etc. Thus, both teams will work together on set as well as outside.
And let's not forget the logo! Every news programme, every TV programme has a logo, as well as the channel that broadcasts it... We must think about the logo and name of the news programme and the channel that will broadcast it!
Task 6: Lights, camera and action
It's time to start filming! Before doing so, we will have to practice a few things with the camera...Once we get the cameras right, presenters in place, news written and rehearsed, everything is ready .... Here we go!
We'll take several shots on set, where the presenters will publish the headlines, and we'll go on location to record the news, interviews and/or reports!
If it doesn't come out the first time, don't worry, it's great fun to watch the outtakes afterwards!
Once we have all the videos, a task begins that is not easy…
To do this, we must first familiarize ourselves with the programme .....
Congratulations, we already have our news programme recorded and edited!
