ELA/SS

Over the past two quarters, 8th graders have been learning about US history and examining modern examples of racial injustice and environmental racism. Here are their culuminating projects.

Students described past events through the lens of racial injustice and moving towards racial justice. They also reflected on their hopes for the future.

English Language Arts:

After an in-depth study of cases of environmental racism and injustice at the national, state, and local levels, 8th graders worked in small groups to use case studies to persuade local civic leaders to recognize, prevent, mitigate, and solve environmental racism and injustice. These presentations were shared with Orange County Commissioner Renee Price when she came to our Zoom class to hear from the students. She was joined by civic leader David Caldwell, an integral part of the movement to mitigate and solve the challenges presented by the Rogers Road landfill in Chapel Hill. (The link will take you to an article from The New Yorker that details the centuries-long challenges. Students read and analyzed this piece).
