War in the Pacific

Students are currently reading Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac, a novel about the Navajo code talkers that contributed greatly to the United States winning World War II, especially against Japan on the islands of the Pacific. Next, students will read Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Watasuki Houston and James D. Houston, a memoir of a young American girl who is forced to live in the Japanese internment camps with her family. In addition to these texts, students are gathering information about the cultures and experiences of marginalized groups in the United States during World War II.

For their final product, students will be writing an informational essay about one of the topics we are covering this quarter. This project will be developed in quarter 3 due to the changed timeline of remote learning.
