First Grade Tulip Project
Partnering with the Munford Montane Longleaf Children's Forest, and Mrs. Murray (Munford Middle/High School, 4H, and Alabama Forestry Service) our first graders helped to plant tulips in collaboration with a national project. In the spring they will see the wave of spring across North America as everyone shares when their flowers bloom! https://journeynorth.org/tulips
This is the link that has our information and I will update later in January when our 1st graders check on the bulbs.

Fourth Grade Classroom in the Forest
Fourth Grade had a great day at the Munford Schools Outdoor Classrooms with the Classroom in the Forest program with other great Partners in the Coosa River Watershed.
The CCW brought the EnviroScape and shared with Fourth Graders about water quality and about the watershed they live in.
At Munford Elementary School, students share their knowledge of STEAM builds by communicating the what and the why behind their learning. Every STEAM lesson is a powerful opportunity for students to solve real-world problems by creating prototypes of the solutions. Please check out this folder of videos and photographs of these builds and creative thinking, problem solving skills in action!
STEAM Club Days
Students at Munford Elementary school are given the opportunity to get out of the regular classroom and mingle with other students in their grade level on STEAM Club Day. During this time, teachers divide into teams and have students rotate to different STEAM stations. For example, in the month of December, students were encouraged to complete a community service activity, an engineering activity, and a digital or coding activity. Many students created cards for teachers or community leaders. Some students engaged in a piano lab. Some students completed their Hour of Code activities and coding challenge from Mrs. Clifton, our STEAM teacher. Many students engineered solutions to problems through the 4 C's - Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Communication. As we continue, we will add to our STEAM Club Days with different themes and more images to come!
Afterschool STEAM, students at Munford Elementary school enrolled in the afterschool program have the unique opportunity to experience engaging STEAM lessons in a larger space! The above pictures were taken from a Hidden Pathway STEAM lesson with students on September 13, 2023 during the afterschool program. As you can see, all students enrolled in afterschool, are allowed to participate in the STEAM program.

STEAM in After School
Today with afterschool we did a “Speed Ring” STEAM activity. The entire team must pass through the hula hoop as quick as possible.
Students made a circle by holding hands.
Starting with the first person, the hula hoop must pass around each person in the group.
We started with each grade learning how to pass the hula hoop. We ended with all after-school students in a circle working together.
In after school we promote a collaborative culture that has created a positive after school environment with remarkable results.
A few quotes from the wrap-up:
Hannah 1st grade - “we helped each other”
Brooklyn 1st grade - “when you practice you get better”
Miles 1st grade - “learn from your mistakes”
Sophia 1st grade - “if you help the people in front of you and the back of you, it will help get through the hula hoop”
James Spann visited Munford Elementary School on Friday, September 22, 2023 to visit third graders to kickoff their fall unit on weather. James spoke to students about various weather types, the science and math side of meteorology, and showed them examples of weather events in Alabama. This visit introduced academic vocabulary that the students will see over the course of the unit as well. Third grade students are doing project-based learning about weather related to natural disasters that tie in reading, math, science, and social studies. In science and math, the students will conduct experiments with building a model that resists simulated weather. In reading and social studies, the students will be reading informational text and conducting research in order to write an informational report on how to prepare for a natural disaster.
Mathematics Team - Munford Math Marvels
For the 2023-24 school year, students in second, third, fourth, and fifth grade were allowed to participate in the Munford Math Marvels mathematics team. Before the competition, these students met after school to work through rigorous math challenges. They prepared for group and individual competitions. On February 12, 2024 the students competed in the first ever perennial mathematics competition for Talladega County Schools. Check out the video to the left of all the math challenges our students competed in! We are so proud of all their hard work!
