Through our community partnerships, all students are supported in their STEAM learning experiences by participating in meaningful projects with community mentors. Our teachers also strive to provide students with real-world connections through Project Based Learning.
Our one-to-one technology initiative allows all students to have extensive opportunities to be supported in extending their learning beyond the school day. Every teacher at MES has a Google Classroom for students which allows students to reach out to their teachers at any time for assistance. All students in third through fifth grades take their Chromebooks home which extends the learning opportunities when the school day ends.
Two of our school buses are equipped with Wi-fi and have certified teachers serving as tutors. Students work on projects and receive assistance on their school work as they ride to and from school each day! In addition, all students are encouraged to apply for leadership opportunities, such as Lighthouse Team, STEAM Team (JSU), and STEAM Team (Montevallo) for extended learning opportunities. Many of these students compete in state and regional competitions.
Each summer, the school provides a summer reading program for all students at no cost. Certified teachers are available to work with students as they read and take Accelerated Reader tests. Additionally, the Munford Public Library partners with the school to provide a second location for students to be able to participate in this program.
All Munford Elementary School students have the opportunity to participate in our after school program. In this program, students enjoy a healthy snack before participating in recreation time, receiving homework help, and participating in STEAM enrichment activities. Students complete online programs for enrichment and remediation, as well as, playing learning games on iPads.
The after school program also provides extension activities. For example, the Boy Scouts of America came to demonstrate how to retire an American Flag for students after they studied about the history of the American Flag and wrote essays about the American Flag. The after school program also offers enrichment activities like group field trips to the movies and bowling.
After school students also participate in the Green Team which helps to beautify the three Munford Schools. They conduct trash clean up days at each campus and plant seasonal flowers as part of their work. They provide extra support to our science program, as needed, like helping to create and prepare raised flower beds to get ready to plant lettuce in our school garden.
Students have daily leadership jobs in each classroom. These jobs create student responsibility, leadership, and community.
Third through fifth grade students can apply for jobs such as greeters and announcers for the school. Students apply with an actual application, go through an interview process, and are chosen based on their interviews and applications. Students have leadership jobs in each classroom to help with daily duties in the class and school to help them learn responsibility and leadership skills.
Fourth and fifth grade students can also apply to be on the STEAM team and/or the Student Light House Team. The Student Light House Team plans and implements the 9 weeks celebrations each quarter. They host guests and educate them about our school and the work that takes place at our school. They also represent our school at functions and events outside of school giving them experience for and in the real world.
Second and fifth grade students learn more about the world around them by participating in the Liberty Legacy Project each year to learn about heroes in their local community.
On Wednesday, March 6, 2019, students from Munford Elementary School attended a performance of the Amani Children's Choir from Uganda. Students donated $1 a piece to help the students from Uganda build a school, so they can receive a public education. Through our school's partnership with Munford Baptist Church, the Amani Children's Choir came to Munford Elementary so all of our students could be a part of this cultural experience.
Students at Munford Elementary School use technology in impactful ways to help connect them to the world and give them real-world applications using technology. The students learn to collaborate digitally with one another using Google products like Google Docs and Google Slides to replicate work place collaboration. Students also use their devices to code robots and create games using coding websites to give them experience creating real products. Digital Learning Day isn't a one day event at Munford Elementary School; it's the way we learn.
