Teachers at Munford Elementary School were given a challenge to introduce and teach all of their digital literacy and computer science standards (DLCS) during the 2022-23 school year. The local STEAM teacher created this document for all of the teachers at M.E.S. with active links to help students understand each standard of the DLCS. Teachers were presented with this document in an after school professional development session on the digital literacy standards (DLCS).
Teachers are lead in comprehensive professional development regularly by other teachers, our Reading, Math, and Technology coaches, and our administrators. Munford Elementary School proudly participates in Talladega County School's "Expert Down the Hall" program. In this program, a teacher leader at each school leads turn around trainings at the local school to increase teacher fluency in computational thinking and other essential strategies.
The faculty and staff at Munford Elementary School are given several opportunities to grow their professional learning about the 2018 Alabama Digital Literacy and Computer Science Standards. In addition to having a full time STEAM teacher dedicated to teaching and assessing these standards, all teachers at Munford Elementary School are provided with professional development (P.D.) on these standards. Teachers have embedded P.D. built into their weekly schedules. Teachers often stay and assist the STEAM teacher in teaching and assessing these standards during the school day. In addition, teachers can attend online P.D. provided by the local school or district. Finally, the Talladega County School District provides specific P.D. on the DLCS Standards and STEAM through its STEAM by Design Symposium held yearly at B.B. Comer Memorial High School.
One of the most unique opportunities teachers at Munford Elementary School have is learning along side their students in STEAM Class. Teachers are invited to stay and learn with their student in their weekly STEAM class. Teachers can then check out the materials and use them in their own classrooms to enhance student learning and content knowledge. See the "Tweets" below for examples of this learning through learning with each other.

Journey North engages students and citizen scientists around the world in tracking seasonal changes at wildlife migration. First grade students at Munford Elementary participate every year in the Tulip Test. This year on November 28th, first grade students braved the cold to venture out to our outdoor classroom/courtyard to plant tulips. They will be tracking their growth through observations and charts throughout the school year. Check out all of these amazing photos of the planting process.
