Brush Techniques
Goal:
Reflecting Order in Art: Goal is to master foundational brush techniques using acrylic paint to achieve controlled lines and smooth blends.
Biblical Integration:
1 Corinthians 14:40 NIV "But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way."
Just as God set the universe in perfect order (day and night/seasons/ creation of man), we must apply order to our art practice. A chaotic workspace or dirty brushes will always produce a chaotic result. Our goal is to use order to create beauty. If we don't treat our tools and process with care and order, the art we create is corrupted. A messy brush creates a messy painting. God desires that we approach all things, like our friendships, our studies, our sports, and even our art, with a sense of order and purpose.
APK:
What is the trickiest part you've experienced with painting? Think about the color wheel we painted last class. ( Ex: keeping colors separate and blending smoothly.)
What is the essential order of preparation before painting? (Set up water, squeeze out paint, prepare paper.)
New information:
Modeling Strokes and Blending
Watch the demonstration carefully. Professionals follow a specific order for using their tools. Here are the key techniques:
1. The Flat Brush (For Coverage and Edges)
Broad Coverage: Load the brush lightly, using the entire flat side to lay down a smooth, even layer of color. This is your foundation.
2. The Round Brush (For Detail and Variation)
Fine Lines: Use only the tip with light pressure for small details or thin outlines.
Thick/Thin Lines: Apply medium pressure, then release, to create a stroke that varies in thickness.
3. Orderly Blending (The Focus)
Blending is how you transition smoothly from one color to another. It requires cleanliness and control (order).
Application:
Practice Blending and Strokes
This is your time to practice the orderly techniques you just learned. Divide your practice paper into 4 sections:
1-Flat Brush
2-Round Brush
3- Fine Brush
4-All Brushes
Label each section with a pencil and draw the same thing on each section. It can be something as simple as a geometric shape, flowers, etc. Then proceed to paint each item with the different type of brush according to the section you previously labeled.
Generalization:
Reflect on your practice.
Did you notice how quickly colors became muddy if you forgot to clean your brush? Disorder leads to a disappointing result. Working with order keeps your tools functional and your colors clean, leading to a more successful final piece.
Follow these steps in order before you leave your workstation:
-Scrape: Use an old key or palette knife to scrape excess paint off your palette and put it in the trash. Never wash large amounts of paint down the sink. (This applies if you're using a plastic/metal palette. If you're using a paper plate, just put it in the trash can.)
-Wash: Immediately wash every brush you used under running water with a little soap until all the color is gone and the water runs perfectly clear.
-Reshape: Gently reshape the bristles of the brush back to their original point or edge.
-Store: Place them in a container with the handles down (bristles up) or lay them flat.
-Clean: Wipe down your table and dispose of your paper towels.
Your success in art depends on your adherence to order. The discipline we apply in keeping our brushes clean and our strokes controlled is the same kind of discipline that helps us in life, reflecting the order God established in the world.
