Disposable Products
Starting from the 1950s, disposable and palm-sized packaging has been extended from the filling of edible substances (e.g. ketchup, soy sauce, brewed drinks, various condiments, etc.) to daily necessities (e.g. wet wipes, shampoo, etc.), and almost every item imaginable is taking advantage of small-volume packaging. However, the cruel fact behind such convenience is the issue of environmental protection: 85.5 billion small plastic packaging bags are thrown away every year, which are enough to cover the entire surface of the earth!
Small packaging items can be found everywhere in our lives.
Plastic waste is seriously polluting the earth.
The amount of garbage has increased year by year
Everyday everyone is creating garbage, which needs to be disposed of by landfill or incineration. According to the data from the database of the Environmental Protection Administration of Taiwan, the annual amount of waste processed by incinerators in Taiwan has increased year by year. Currently, more than 6 million tons of wastes are incinerated every year. Due to the impact of the pandemic, many people stay at home and do not go out, which has led to a surge in the amount of waste produced. Last year in 2020, the amount of waste produced in Taiwan has reached a record high of 9.86 million tons, with an average of about 417 kg of waste produced per person. The problem is that it is difficult for our incinerators and landfills to accommodate the huge amount of garbage, which has led to the emergence of garbage hills in some areas in Taiwan. Some are on the mountain, which may pollute the water source; some are on the seaside, which may pollute the marine ecology chain.
The most easily replaceable plastic products are almost always 3C products.
One of the ways to eliminate plastic is to burn it, but toxic gas production is a serious problem.
Environmental pollution
Waste pollution is mainly from discarded daily necessities, garbage, etc. In a country with better living conditions, people tend to produce more waste. Waste needs to be processed and managed; otherwise it will cause environmental pollution problems. For example, the large-scale use of plastic products causes a large amount of garbage when they are used up. Plastic garbage cannot be decomposed in the natural ecosystem and must be removed by incineration. However, incineration causes air pollution. If plastic waste flows into the drainage channel, it will block water channel. When it rains heavily, the flood disaster will follow. Therefore, Taiwan faces a serious waste pollution situation.
The garbage is scattered on the land, sunk in the depths of the sea and in lakes.
The British supermarket "Iceland Foods" announced the goal of eliminating plastic packaging from its own products by 2023.
