Time of visit: October 12,2022
Site of visit: Tzu Chi Environmental Protection Education Center
Visitors: Ms. Shu-Fang Chen
With the teacher’s guidance, our research team arrived in Da-an Tzu Chi Environmental Protection Station near the school for the visit. First, Ms. Chen introduced the environment and process of the environmental protection center. Waste collected is the daily necessities of community residents. After the residents send them to the environmental protection center, the volunteers practice the classification. The daily necessities include PET bottles, plastic, Tetra Pak, paper, electric equipment and products, clothes, shoes, etc. Most of electric products are the composite materials made with various kinds of plastic and metal. Disassembling and recycling are difficult tasks.
Learn how to sort and organize recyclable wastes.
Learn how recycling is disassembled.
According to Ms. Chen, every year in Taiwan, 54 hundred million PET bottles and 152 hundred million plastic bags are recycled. However, they can be decomposed after 500 years. Thus, in the environmental concept of Tzu Chi, “waste” does not exist since everything can be recycled with the effect of circular economy. The environmental volunteers of Tzu Chi are voluntary participants who intend to protect the environment. They carefully classify and clean the recycled PET bottles and plastic for the quality of recycling. They aim to send PET bottles and plastic to Tzu Chi Da Ai Technology to create various kinds of environmental projects and textile products. At present Tzu Chi Da Ai Technology has introduced more than one hundred environmental products such as yarns, fabric, clothing, textile products and recycled products of daily lives in order to significantly lower the damage on environment. It intends to create more environmental products for disaster relief and the society.
There are classified recycling areas, such as the plastic area in the recycling station.
Volunteers handle the recyclable wastes with care.
After the visit in the afternoon, we recognized the efforts of the volunteers in Tzu Chi Environmental Protection Center and we realized that the textile products produced were made of recycled PET bottles and plastic. Moreover, we visited the environment and process of the center to witness how daily “waste” was transformed into reusable material by the volunteers. We are impressed by the diversity of environmental textile products made by recycled PET bottles of Da Ai Technology. Finally, we hope that in the future, there will be more enterprises which value the concept of “Circular Economy” and focus on energy saving and carbon reduction, environmental protection and sustainable development as the priority in R&D and manufacturing of products.
Electronic products need to be dismantled by professional volunteers.
They are ready to be sent to factories to make various environmentally friendly products.
The original waste is turned into valuable materials by the hands of the volunteers.
We have a better understanding of resource recycling and sorting.
