Visit time: September 28, 2022
Time of visit: Muzha Refuse Incineration Plant, Environmental Protection Bureau, Taipei City Government
Visitors: Commissioner Wu Hongru
In order to learn about the disposal of daily refuse, the environmental trip started from Muzha Refuse Incineration Plant. In Muzha Refuse Incineration Plant which disposes daily refuse for the residents in Taipei City, we saw a high chimney. At the top of chimney, there were four little ones and the giraffe welcomed us with a big smile. It was the house of giraffe, Muzha Refuse Incineration Plant. First, the friendly guide introduced the tasks of incineration plant by briefing and we realized that incinerator can not only burn refuse, but also generate electric power by renewable energy source. The electricity can be sold to Taipower and the funds serve as the budget for the construction of Taipei City Government. Thus, it leads to higher quality of public facilities for the residents. It is world-class circular use and we were impressed.

The environment of the plant is like a beautiful park.
Subsequently, the guide showed us the control room at the mouth of incinerator and we saw the piled refuse from the glass. Four little chimneys in the incinerator were connected with four doors and the workers carefully put the refuse in the mouth. We were impressed. However, we felt distressed that we produced so much refuse every day. In addition, although we were close to the piled refuse, it was not smelly. It showed the prevention of smell in Muzha Refuse Incineration Plant.
Explaining the waste treatment process of the incineration plant and the use of waste heat to generate electricity.
Designing Q&A with prizes to increase people’s awareness of energy conservation.
The following was the learning of experiential course: “transformation of kitchen waste”. First, we realized that the common daily kitchen waste can be reused as “resources”. Thus, kitchen waste was transformed into modern black gold/compost; in addition, by the interactive game of “the inspiration of food”, we recognized the importance of resources and food; finally, in the course of LOHAS DIY, we put the organic fertilizer of kitchen waste in the pots to grow the plants. The students thus construct the concept of resource recycling and they will cherish the resources and reduce the carbon by properly using the resources.
The importance of cherishing food is demonstrated through the interactive game "Inspired by Food".

Finally, by the learning sheets and posters, the guide introduced the annual amount of emission of carbon dioxide, the number of trees to absorb carbon dioxide and electric power by incinerator. We learned significantly from the visit in the afternoon. People contribute to the environment from different places. We hope that everyone can reduce refuse and reuse the resources to protect our environment.
