A slingback is used when there is significant space that is not closing with a standard powerchain. This type of auxiliary is only used when the patient has stainless steel wires (typically 19x25SS in the upper).
You start by cutting a piece of regular powerchain that is 8 links long, in the video above 7 links is used because the patient is missing a premolar. If it is placed and you feel like it is not enough pressure than then the number of links can be adjusted, but you can always ask your clinical lead if you are unsure.
Start the powerchain link around the 7 hook on the bracket. Make sure the mathieu is secure around the last link of powerchain and stretch the powerchain around the hook that is crimped onto the stainless steel wire. You want to make sure the hook is crimped on tight, especially if the space is in between the 2-3, because if the hook slides, it will not allow the space to close!! Once the chain is around the hook, continue to stretch it all the way back to the molar that you started on.
Make sure to inform the patient that they may get a pokey wire with this auxiliary, that means the space is closing. Set the patient up for success by giving them plenty of wax or gishy-goo to be comfortable until their next appointment.
