Powerchain is an auxiliary used underneath the wire to close space. It is typically placed when there is an 18x25 CuNiti wire or greater (SS or finishing wires). Having a powerchain pulling the teeth can restrict the arch width, rotation, and torque, so you want to make sure that there is a strong enough wire in place to allow the space to close while holding the arch width. Also, once the space is closed, the powerchain should be removed and replacing with wire tie and k-ties, etc. to keep the space closed. A good way to know if powerchain is needed, without any obvious spacing, is by asking the patient how their contacts feel when they floss. If they say they can feel spaces when they floss, or the contacts feel loose then that would be a good reason to powerchain. It is also good to take a small mirror and look all the way back 7-7 for spaces. If you are unsure about placing a powerchain you can always confirm with the doctor or your team lead.
If all molars are bonded you typically only chain 6-6 (12 links) and the second molars will follow, but in some cases where there is space in between the first and second molars then you will powerchain 7-7 (14 links). A powerchain should only stay on for 4-6 weeks and then removed, or until the space is closed! Once the space is closed, the wire tie should be placed tightly so the space does not open back up. Once space opens up, it can be difficult to keep it closed so you want to make sure to always keep an eye out, especially towards finishing stages. Common spaces that are missed are in between the 6's and 7's and can be hard to close once the brackets are removed.
