Scratchboard

Artist Statement:

For this project, the goal was to create a realistic scratchboard showing texture, and detail with fine lines.

I created this artwork with a 9" x 12" scratchboard and various scratch tools.

To start this project, we began with printing out a picture in black and white. I chose a picture of my dog that I thought showed a lot of her hair texture.  After that, I taped the picture on top of the scratchboard and used a dull pencil to trace over the basic shape of the picture. This helped me to make my scratchboard more realistic and to scale. Once I had some guidelines I began scratching. I scratched more in the areas that were more white and used various techniques like cross-hatching, plain lines, and dots to show the difference in value throughout my picture. I struggled to make the clovers in the grass and found it difficult to make them look like they belonged and not just random circles in the grass. Once I had finished scratching my dog and the background I was done!
