Relief

All that Glitters

Plant Matter,  Playing Cards, Tape, and Spray Paint

20 x 30 x 6

For this relief, I think I got to experiment and play a bit more because I did not have to worry about how the end result looked from all sides. I knew that I wanted to arrange seemingly random objects, but I rotated through many ideas such as using used beauty products (hairspray canisters, mascara tubes etc.). I settled on the crumpled paper and hydrangeas because I liked the texture, and the hands arranged throughout are meant to convey a sense of searching or longing.

My process began with using a glue gun to attach crumpled pieces of paper and hydrangeas to a foam poster board. All of the plant material used for this project came from my backyard. I added the cards for fun and because I feel that they added a different texture in a sea of crinkled parts. I made the hands by wrapping packing tape around my left arm and fingers, sticky side up. I could then cut away these "casts" and attach them to the rest of my work. I added the leaves to the background because I felt that the blank space was uncomfortable. I finished by using gold spray paint to color the entire piece.

All in all, I ended up actually creating a mashup of two of my original concept sketches, but I still drifted off of this path and added different components as I went along. This was a fun project because I could create chaos and still unify the piece by having the end result be monotone. I especially loved the way that the gold spray paint colored the leaves.
