Stars and Stripes

Stars and Stripes

Watercolor, Ink, and Plastic on Watercolor Paper

11 x 15

I was limited to a color palette of red, white, blue, and black, and also wanted to emphasize the stars and stripes of the American flag. I used the stripes to form a city scape, and the stars were incorporated into the sky hanging over the city. The eyes symbolize government surveillance.

For materials, I used a pencil and ruler to sketch out my lines, which I filled in with watercolor paint. I used ink to trace the eyes, and the watercolor background above the city was kept loose and contains multiple blues. I finished by taping plastic wrap over the eyes to add texture. I am not too sure about this last step, and I do not think it photographed well.

I was faithful to my original sketch, with the exception of the eyes in the sky. The plastic wrap was unplanned, and the sky become more varied than I initially had intended. I also had planned to include stripes on the buildings, but I am happy I stuck to solid colors; I think stripes would have been distracting and busy.
