For the "camp" logo, I wanted to incorporate the letters into some sort of image. The "c" became part of a mountain, the "a" was part of a fire, and the "m" became two tents. The black background is a night sky, and also the outline of a mountain. The dark space above the "c" could be a rising sun or part of the mountain. For the "AP Bio" logo, I wanted to use more contrast and negative space, so the letters are white on a black background. The letters are being pulled away from the center of the circle like chromosomes during metaphase of mitosis (cell devision).
For both logos, I used graphite to sketch out the design, then used ink to fill in the gaps and make lines darker and bolder. Both of the logos were made in my sketchbook. For the "AP Bio" logo I used a stencil and later a soup bowl to make the circle more accurate. I used different ink pens, each layered over one another, for the second logo, since the fill at first appeared patchy and littered with white specks. I also wanted to avoid the shapes that are visible in the fill of the "camp" logo. Both logos were then edited in photoshop.
Each logo went through multiple revisions. The camp logo became simpler and the black background was added for contrast. Smaller details like stars in the night sky were taken out. The "a" also took on different forms, changing from a tent to a fire. The "AP Bio" logo was always a filled in circle with letters being pulled apart by cables, but the positioning of the letters, as well as the amount of actual chromosomes, changed over time. The letters were moved around to be more readable and clear, and they are now aligned in a roughly horizontal way so as not to confuse the reader. The design was simplified to just two actual chromosomes to avoid distracting from the letters while still communicating what is going on. Additionally, photoshop allowed me to create even lines and starker contrasts. I was able to make the designs bolder and eliminate visible strokes.
