Time Capsule Observational Drawings

Observational Drawings: Hand, Self-Portrait, Chemex

Graphite Pencil on Drawing Paper

9 x 12

These were observational drawings drawn from real life. I was prompted to draw my hand in an interesting gesture, a cropped section of my face, and a still life of an object I depend on. For the self-portrait I was supposed to draw a small section of my face but ended up filling in other details as I went along. My face is something I have avoided in the past. For the drawing of my hand, I chose the quiet coyote pose since it makes me laugh. I chose to draw a Chemex because I don't think I can function without coffee, and because I thought the wrinkled filter paper would be interesting to try to capture.

All of the drawings were made with graphite pencils on drawing paper.

I always started out with a faint outline before moving on to darker, looser strokes. I was usually very fixated on precise details at first, but then moved on to shading, and other more loose ways of capturing what I saw.
