Paper Reflection Sculpture

Angel

Paper, Superglue, and Thread

15 x 12 x 11

I had to choose one word to be the inspiration for this statue and I selected "paranoia". I knew that I wanted to incorporate eyes and I was limited to white paper for material (I could not rely on paint or ink to create these shapes). While my initial inspiration may seem serious or eerie, I took the opportunity to have fun and play with proportion, form, and texture. This statue is a bit of a hot mess, but I allowed myself a greater degree of freedom than was typical during 2D Design, and I had fun experimenting with building crumped paper into a more elaborate form.

My process began by crumpling paper and slowly building multiple pieces into a more cohesive shape. I took inspiration from the short exercise at the beginning of class where we had to quickly give a sheet of printer paper a 3D shape. I incorporating eyes by cutting them out of a different type of paper and attaching them to the sculpture. I played with this by giving them stalks and suspending them from the statue using thread. I used superglue to attach various components, although I occasionally used thread to literally stitch the statue together.

Making this sculpture was a very dynamic process that was constantly evolving. I have never made anything 3D and this was definitely a new experience where I had no previous knowledge to guide me. My greatest struggle was stability and attachment. I had to experiment with the superglue and learn to apply it in such a way that would keep my statue in one piece, while avoiding the embarrassment of getting my fingers stuck together. I also had to work in such a way that my sculpture would not tip over.  Printer paper is not a particularly strong material, so I had to be careful not to build too far and send the whole work flying.
