Sustained Investigation #6: "Nihon"
Watercolor on Canvas Paper
15" x 12"
This painting depicts the cityscape of Tokyo and a portrait of one of my close friends on a backdrop inspired by traditional Japanese landscape art. I chose to include these aspects in my art, traditional and modern, in this portrait because of the massive impacts both of these have on Japanese culture. Japan has a rich cultural history, with many of its influences still evident in modern day. However, in recent years Japan has become known as a powerful and technologically advanced country, one of the most progressive in the world. I tried to tie these together in one piece so that all the aspects could come together.
I completed this piece using Watercolor on Canvas Paper.
I decided to attempt the canvas paper again, but using a medium I was more familiar with- watercolors. However, working on the Canvas paper proved to be just as difficult, maybe even more so with the watercolors. I tried to do an downwards angle for the portrait of my friend. To improve upon this piece I would choose a better medium to work on with watercolors and study the perspectives of the human face more so I would be able to convey the angle more effectively with accurate proportions.
