Scholastic Submission #1: "光復香港"

Watercolor on Watercolor Paper

15" x 12"

My painting depicts one of the protestors in Hong Kong, wearing a gas mask and surrounded by falling, dead birds. The protestors in Hong Kong are required to wear gas masks and goggles to protect themselves from the excessive amounts of tear gas used by the HKPD to subdue the protests. Because of the 2.5k tear gas canisters used by police, several birds have been dying throughout the city due to the extreme rise in cyanide and dioxin levels. My close friend in Hong Kong, once an exchange student here in the states, has been telling me about the effects of the tear gas in the city- on the people and the wildlife. As an active protestor, she has been telling me of the health effects that her friends and even dog are suffering due to the attacks on protestors by the HKPF.

I completed this piece using Watercolor on Watercolor Papers.

For this piece, I went back to the familiar Watercolors on Watercolor Paper. I decided to paint a man wearing the iconic yellow construction hat of the protestors while wearing a gas mask and goggles. The Cantonese script reads "Liberate Hong Kong", part of the protestors revolutionary slogan, "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our time".
