Arrive Alive

Arrive Alive: "Not Only You"

Colored Pencils on Drawing Paper

8" x 10"

This drawing shows the horror of distracted driving- not even realising the end of fate as it approaches. The two adults in the front pay no attention and drive on, distracted on their phones, while the child realises the impending fate in horror. I wanted to capture one of the scariest things about distracted driving, that there isn't even a chance as the driver and maybe even passengers approach their death completely unknowingly. Many people tend to drive more riskily when alone, so for this piece I wanted to emphasize that everyone is affected by the crushing outcome of distracted driving . I chose to place the adult in the foreground with a serene expression, their faces lit by the blue glow of a smartphone, to demonstrate the unsettling ignorance of their fate. The child in the back has a frightened and sad expression, crying out to the unhearing figures up front. Her placement in the background represents the sudden consequences that come hurtling from behind. I chose to do a black and red background to emphasize the injury and destructive void that accompanies distracted driving.
