Materials: Driftwood, wood glue, pull down screen (and cord), beads (wooden +metal), hot glue.
My favorite part about creating this piece was the creativity that went into it. Originally I was going to make a model out of newspaper and cardboard, but I wanted to make something more inventive and resourceful. I began to brainstorm what materials I could use. I did a lot of digging through the art closet and decided to do drift wood for the main frame of the boat. I thought it would be an appropriate material to use because it is a sailboat and I would be using a natural material that was not wasteful. To create this piece I began by determining where I wanted the "masts" to be. I then used a drill to make holes to better support the sticks and wood glue to keep them in place. I also cut out triangles from old pull down screens I found in the art closet. I also used the strings from those to imitate rope on the sails. I found some wooden beads and used those to hold the rope in place and to add detail. There were other various wooden shapes and metal beads that I glued together to create a wheel and mounted that onto another piece of driftwood and repeated the steps of drilling and gluing the post onto the body of the boat.
