heart investigation #2

heart of illusion

dementions:

height: 7 inch

width: 7  inch

length:7 inch

main idea:

create a heart that looks like its collapsing in on itself

how it was made:

I first made a ball of aluminum foil into the shape of a triangle then layed the air dry clay on that and created the collapsing form of the heart. Once the clay peice was baked i painted and used mod podge to give it a glossier look then constructed the sculpture that holds the heart and suspended said heart in the air.

artist statement:

this piece is another part of my heart investigation and is inspired by illusions and carnival games. As a child my mom always took me and my siblings to fairs and that is one of my best memories is share with her. this piece in particular is inspired by that carnival game that has you running on sort of a wheel and it has a black and white design. I also took inspiration from that sinking feeling you get when something bad happens by adding the groves that lead to the middle creating look that makes the heart look like its sinking into itself.

I started this piece by creating a triangle of aluminum foil.  Then I created a layer of clay around the triangle of aluminum. to that layer of clay I added triangle shaped chunks of clay, I smoothed then down as much as possible then baked the heart. Once the heart was baked I painted it black and white then I used mod podge to make it have a glossy finish.  I then created the structure and painted that white too. for each of my hearts the way I chose to securely hang then was to put the yarn/ribbon that hung them up in between the two layers of Styrofoam and glue the top onto the mess of yarn/ribbon.

the most challenging part of this heart was evenly spreading the sections of black and white also creating sharp lines in the clay is difficult as well. I think the most effective way to get the sharp lines is to make sure to use clean tools and water. Also warming the clay a little in your hand before you start working with the clay works well too. For spacing i just tried to make the triangle chunks of clay a similar size.
