heart investigation #1

yarn heart

dementions:

height: 9 inch

width:9 inch

length:9 inch

main idea:

Create an anatomically correct yarn representation of a human heart and then hang it up.

how it was made:

I made a triangle shaped tinfoil center then layered on clay and added the ventricles, baked the clay then wrapped it in yarn with superglue. I then built the white structure out of wood, cardboard , and hot glue. then I put the peices together.

artist statement:

this piece was inspired by my love or hearts, which eventually sprouted to be the focus of my following projects. For this heart in particular I wanted to focus on just the anatomy. Then I decided to add the twist of different colors and made a choice to use yarn.  another key component of my project was to have them hanging up, and to achieve this i decide to create a square structure and string up each heart.

I started by creating sketches of an anatomical heart and labeling color placement and different patterns I wanted to make.  while actually making the sculpture I found that the easiest method of creating your heart shape is simple, as long as you know where all the ventricles go of course. i started the sculpture with a triangle of aluminum foil then added a layer of clay, I found that rolling out a piece of clay so that would encase the entire triangle was the best method to make the layer of  clay thick enough to cover the aluminum but thin enough to not make it too heavy to string up. I them added all of the ventricles by making each one then using a sort of criss cross motion with a clay tool on the ventricle then the place on the base that I wanted to attach the ventricle. after the sculpture was baked i attached the yarn by using super glue and scissors to hold pieces of yarn in place, once the whole sculpture was covered in yarn I made the square structure and hung the heart up.

I think the most challenging part of this heart was working with the super glue. The super glue stuck to everything so every-time I would go to hold down a piece of yarn with my finger it would immediately stick that is why I decided to hold the yarn down with scissors.  that method worked relatively well although there were still times that the glue would stick to the scissor so i had to be careful to hold the yarn and not touch the glue.
