Tape Flowers

The main idea that guided my artwork to make the tape falcon is trying to recreate an image I was given of a realistic falcon and create it out of tape. To do this I had to simplify the main shapes/structure of the falcon to capture its flying pose. To demonstrate the movement of the wings and the shape of the feathers I added tape to create lines in their general direction. I also taped lines into the back feathers to demonstrate the box like section of the feathers on the real image. I didn't really have an idea going into the tape design I could make anything out of. I made a few sketches on paper of a fish and a few geometric patterns but honestly I just made the shape of a flower head on my wall, then went from there. The entire thing is a arrangement of different flowers that are no species in particular.

The one and only material I used for both these projects was blue painters tape. This is an unusual material and I have never used it or anything reseballing. There was a bit of a learning curve with the falcon, the first of the two murals I did as it was near impossible to get clean lines that were not completely straight. Because of this I used a lot of small ripped pieces to make the head, even if it made it a bit jagged. The lines of the curved wings are a bit smoother if not the same thickness throughout because the tape curves over itself. For the flowers I did not have as many technical issues because most of the lines were straight or mildly curved, working on a smaller scale also helped.

The first thing I did was sketch out a few ideas that mostly consisted of random geometric shapes with lines of different frequencies going through, giving the illusion of light and dark. I also sketched a fish made out of triangles because I thought curved lines would be too hard to make with the painters tape. Then I was told to make a falcon out of the tape and all the previous ideas I had kind of went out the window after I learned how to use the material. For the flower I started with a large geometric flower head on the wall of my room, then I walked away. When I looked at it again and again, the flowers just didn't feel right. I thought of turning it into the death star or into a giant squid . After some contemplating I just decided to trust the process and made a whole arrangement of flowers.
