Arrive Alive competition

Know what's there?

The main idea that guided this artwork is the John Boristine art and writing competition "Arrive Alive" part of their campaign to raise awareness about distracted driving. There was a lot of creative freedom with what we could do for this assignment, I choose to take a graphic design approach that quickly led me to making a four frame long animated GIF of a car driving down a road with objects ging by that change in appearance as they move. This combined with my original slogan "Do you really know what's there?" is supposed to indicate that as a distracted driver you can't really know what's in front of you which is obviously dangerous for everyone involved. The visuals and slogan are ovouse and to the point about the message with I hope will make it effective for awareness and for the competition.

This work was made on the digital program Procreate on an iPad using an apple pencil as a stylist, notably just the base program not there new animation one Procreate Dream because I tried and failed to learn that one during the duration of this project. Using the simplified but familiar tools of the base program I worked in layer groups for each frame. Theas groups contained the lineart for the car and road that were copied then altered slightly for the moving effect and a different object or two that changed as it appeared to move across the image. Color and text were added to the frame individually. The whole thing was exported as an animated GIF for the competition.

I first tried to make this piece on Procreate Dream which is an actual animation program, but I found it hard to use since I was new to it and it was needlessly complicated for what I was intending to do. On Procreate I was able to do simple motions on there basic animation tool function which works well with the simple graphic design esk car and slogan that I drew and animated. There are four frames to this GIF in total but thats really just the objects moving along the road, the car, road, and lettering are all moving back and forth between two repeating frames over the corse of four. The color pallet is green and yellow for Johe Borstine.
