AJ's Room

Digital art on Procreate

The main idea that guided this artwork was to further utilize my inquiry question in a way were I could also draw a background. This room connects to the same story as the others because it is one of the characters rooms, AJ, the character I have previously drawn for this investigation. I wanted to show the characters personality through a the setting they inhabit. Every time I wanted to add an object to the image it had to check off a box closely related to the character. In AJ's sake it had to be something related to on of the sports she dose baseball, lacrosse, kickboxing; art related, specifically street art themed; a nerdy interest in the vain of movies or music; something space themed (hinting at the later abduction); or something that looks stolen (ex. the stop sign and orange wiggly chair). By incorporating every object with intention the personality and story of the character really shine through.

This program was made digitally on the program Procreate on an iPad using an apple pencil was a stylist. Going into this work I had a for more "pop art vibe" idea originally. Using a digital medium I was able to experiment with different color pallets but ultimately settled on greyscale. Doing this work digitally was still the best choice because I went and changed the values of different objects many times to achieve the right balance of light and dark. I also ended up changing the canvas size in the finished piece to make the whole piece more consice. I like drawing digitally and plan on doing the whole comic that way.

Creating a balance in the room was a hard task so there is a lot of intentional placement of objects and values to achieve that. Given that there is no particular subject the viewer's eye will most likely drawn to the darkest values first before looking around at the other details, so there is a balance of the darkest value throughout the piece. To tie into the personality of the charicter the left side is more artistic and cluttered while the right is sporty and neat. To keep the balance of the piece the right side has a lot of arger objects ans well as the eye drawing stop sign to compeat with the jumbel of many things on the left. The bed is a natural item and therifor in the middle but a bit of arts and sports do naturaly occure on there generaly opposite side. I moved around items and changed around values a lot to strike that perfect balance.
