Intro:
In this project, we were asked to create a super crop for a farmer. We achieved this by using our knowledge of genetics and heredity to create this certain crop. We got the option to choose between 9 different parent phenotypes and create our crop based off of these. Some of the phenotypes included drought resistance and pest resistance which were in the end, the phenotypes we chose for our crop. Below, is our final product which shows our punnent squares and though process.
Content:
Genotype - genetic constitution of an individual organism
Phenotype - set of observable characteristics of an individual organism
Punnet square - square diagram used to predict the genotype of phenotype of a particular cross or breed
Generation - successive stage in natural descent of organisms
Dominant - alleles that will be shown and expressed if present
Recessive - does not produce a trait at all when only one copy is present
Reflection:
In this project, I learned a lot about myself. For example, I learned that I was being creative and communicating well with my teammates. I led discussions about our project and worked with my team to make the punnet squares and assure that they were being done correctly. We visited our creative sides by compiling many different versions of our super crop in order to eventually come to a conclusion on which version was the most efficient. Although I was effective in these areas, I struggled in others. I realized that I could have worked on being a critical thinker and collaborating more. I could have generated more ideas to my team as well as avoided finishing work individually. In the next project, I am going to focus on improving these skills and becoming a better classmate and teammate.
