Chemical Dominoes

Evidence Of Work:

Our Project:

The task that was given to us in this project was to create a chemical board game. We were allowed to copy other board games but we had to incorporate a variety of different chemical reactions into the game. My group decided to remake clue but instead of at the end when you try to guess the murderer you try to guess the chemical reaction. Once that reaction is found you preform the reaction on the board. We originally started by painting a large wooden board so it would look like the original clue board game. Then for our project we would switch around rules and find different chemical reactions to use.

Content:

In this unit of chemistry we had to learn a variety of different skills in order to make our board game successful. For every chemical reaction there must be two products an two reactants. In the equations there must be balance between them so we had to learn how to balance the elements on each side of a chemical reaction equation. The equations could be any of five chemical reactions, these being:

Synthesis Reaction - Two or more compounds combine to form a new one.

A + B = AB

Decomposition Reaction - a compound breaks down to make simpler ones.

AB = A + B

Single Replacement Reaction - one element (ion) replaces a similar element in a compound.

A + BC = AC + B

Double Replacement Reaction - the ions of two compounds exchange places to form two new compounds.

AB + CD = AD + CB

Combustion Reaction - oxygen combined with a compound to produce carbon dioxide, water, and heat energy.

A + O2 = C02 + H2O

Reflection:

I thought this project was one of the most creative projects that I have done so far in the STEM program. I also got along with my group and thought we collaborated well together. I was able to use many skills I have acquired from this unit of chemistry in this project such as identifying and writing different chemical reactions. Although I thought this project was pretty near perfect in many ways i do think there are some skills that I could still work on my self. I need to work on my conscientious learning. Sometimes while we were working on our project I found myself talking to other people and getting off task. This was most affecting me in the makers space because there were many of my good friends there from the other chemistry class and it was very hard to stay on task. I also want to work on my communication. i felt as if there were times i really actually wanted to participate but I was un motivated to ask because of my poor communicational skills in group projects. Over the next few projects I would really like to improve upon these things especially in the aspect of communication.
