UCI has a number of resources with staff dedicated to helping graduate students!
Graduate Resource Center (GRC)
- The GRC is dedicated specifically to helping Graduate and Professional students maintain gain Professional Development knowledge as well as promoting Health and Wellness
- They host many workshops, one-on-one sessions, and Mental health days
- Student personal favorite: "I love the one-on-one writing help, I've used it for fellowship applications several times and plan to go to them when I write my dissertation. I also really liked the Salary Negotiation workshop!" - Caitlin Suire
Division of Career Pathways (DCP)
- The Division of Career Pathways is a prime source of professional development and job preparation resources. Many of the specifics listed here come in association with the DCP or are offered by them as options outside of UCI.
- A valuable option for practice interviews!
- You can also use this to book an appointment with Lauren Lyon who can go over your resume, CV and help you figure out your career path!

Bri McWhorter: Bri offers several ways to improve your public speaking
- Public Speaking Certificate by Activate to Captivate
- This 8 week public speaking course can teach you ways to relax your nerves, become a more dynamic speaker, and improve your presentation format
- Interview Skills Bootcamp
- This full-day bootcamp is put on by Bri to help students and post-docs hone their interviewing skills

- Science Communication Skills: Physical Sciences 220
- This 10 week Communications course can help you fully craft your Elevator Pitch
- Big Interview is a website that allows you to do virtual mock interviews across many industries
- A particularly useful portion of this website allows you to "build" answers to common interview questions
- You can also go through their Interview Playbook to learn about different scenarios or share your videos to get feedback

- This annual Elevator Pitch competition is open to all Graduate and Professional students. In it, you compete with a two minute, lay-person talk about you and your research!
- This competition starts in UCI, and then the winners move on to compete against the other UC's! Participants give a thorough description of their research in three minutes or less, all for the chance to win large amounts of money!
- The AGS Symposium is for all graduate and professional students, and is aimed at teaching students how to discuss their research in lay terms. Participants have 7 minutes to give background and information on their research for the chance to win monetary prizes!

- Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation (DTEI)
- This group provides teaching training for both graduate students and post-docs
- Teaching Certificate Program
- This program, housed under DTEI, can help you improve your teaching and prepare you for the Pedagogical Fellows Program if that is something you're interested in!
- Pedagogical Fellows Program
- This competitive fellowship offers a year-long training program, in which students take courses, make lesson plans, and train new TAs.
- Improv for Teaching
- Bri McWhorter offers a fun 4-week program focused on helping you think on your feet and become a more dynamic instructor (Note: This offered by the GRC)
- Preparing for a Faculty Career Certificate
- A certificate program for graduate students and post-docs interested in staying in academia (Note: This offered by the GRC)
- Mentoring Excellence Program
- Looking to improve your relationship with your undergraduates or mentor? This certificate program will definitely help with that (Note: This offered by the GRC)
- UC Irvine / CSU Long Beach PRE-Professor Program
- PRE-Professor Program (PREPP) is designed to support the University of California, Irvine (UCI) doctoral students’ and postdoctoral scholars’ transition to a faculty position by engaging them in a semester-long program at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB).

Campus Ally and Awareness Trainings
Campus Ally and Awareness Trainings
- Check the Office of Inclusive Excellence website for the most up-to-date information and other training options.
- AB540 and Undocumented Student Ally Training
- The AB540 and Undocumented Student Ally Training aims to inform faculty and staff how to create a welcoming and supportive campus environment for immigrant students. The training consists of discussions about the policies and laws that are currently affecting students, followed by a student panel and a hands-on activity on how we can best serve UC Irvine students.
- ZotAbility Ally Faculty & Staff Training
- UC Irvine Disability Services Center invites you to attend a 3-hour workshop to become a ZotAbility Ally. This interactive workshop is designed to challenge personal biases, provide awareness, promote diversity, and includes a panel to hear first-hand experiences from UCI students.

"Fall 2019 is well underway and all of us at the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation hope that your quarter is going smoothly so far. A few quick announcements:
- Pedagogical Fellows Application: The PF application deadline is rapidly approaching on October 18th, 2019 at 6pm! For more information about the program, including prerequisites, click here.
- Workshops: Sign up for our workshops here! Topics for quarter include strategies for effectively forming groups and implementing group assessment, how to flip your class successfully and cover the same material, and Bloom’s taxonomy: What is it and how should it factor into your assessment strategy. If you're interested, please RSVP. To find out more about how these can count towards the Certificate in Teaching Excellence, click here!
- Travel Grant: The DTEI Graduate Student and Postdoc Travel Grantapplication deadline is coming up on October 24th! If you are attending a pedagogy-related conference between November 1st, 2019 and April 7th, 2020, be sure to submit your application. For travel between April 8th, 2020, and October 31st, 2020, the application will open Winter quarter and will be due on March 24th, 2020.
