Video: The (procedural) rhetoric of games, by GameMatters (2019).
Procedure Rhetoric Video Points
Overcooked 2 presents an argument about the real world, that being "if you want to succeed, you must communicate efficiently."
This is reflected in the gameplay, where you must communicate with your team member to be able to beat a level and get a high rating.
E.g. kitchens in the game are set up inefficiently, forcing players to coordinate their actions; kitchens are ever transforming to hinder players from establishing fixed routines/roles.
"Procedure" in procedural rhetoric is something that defines certain rules & constraints to allow and deny specific gameplay experiences.
E.g. in Overcooked 2, you can move around but you can't jump over obstacles; you can throw raw food but not fried food. General examples is you can only cook and serve dishes in specific ways and not do stuff like shoot people.

Serious game: making a serious/educational interactive game. Follow brief document but use game design skills to make it interesting.
Big part to look at in brief document: project objectives. This is mainly what the client wants.
Mainly submitting documents, learning journal is assistance to marking.
Make sure to check word counts for documents.
Do not start games until research document is done (applies to both games).
Client pitch is due in week 4 after group is assembled.
Presentation Notes
ChatGPT is now less accurate, make sure to fact check everything when using it and make sure to reference everything.
Scholarly reference must be by scholars; experts in the field who usually work at universities doing research.
"Peer reviewed" sources are sources that are vetted by other scholars before publication.
A scholarly reference looks scholarly if it:
Is written in academic language;
has authors with academic credentials;
has an abstract; and
has an extensive list of references.
GDC presentations are authoritative sources, not scholarly sources.
Tutorials are not scholarly references supporting academic research. Only use them as resources for practical project development.
APA7 referencing is not mandatory for the online devlog, but is for the submitted devlog document.
Structure your paragraphs. A standard structure includes:
Topic sentence;
Evidence/support;
Analysis with example; and
Conclusion.
Make sure to have paraphrasing in research document before including quotes.
