Brief
While games have been popularised as an entertainment medium, companies, schools, and government organisations have increasingly recognised serious games as a valuable genre, or mode, of games. Serious games usually should be entertaining, but their design intent is to persuade, educate or train their players on a topic. This requires both research into the topic, as well as an understanding of some theories about persuasion and learning, such as behaviourism and cognitive psychology.
To this end, you will respond to a brief for an instructional experience, or more broadly ‘serious game’, that serves to persuade or train the player. Depending upon your campus and available resources, your tutor will provide you with a real-world client or a unique brief.
Project Goals
Your goal in this project is to design one serious game, or several smaller serious games, that persuade or educate the player on a stated topic or position of inquiry. Your game should demonstrate an understanding of the topic, its sensitivities for an audience, and appropriate principles of instructional (game) design, with feedback from external stakeholders.
NOTE: This project may be done individually or in a group, so long as at least ONE of your projects in this unit is a group project.
