General notes

• Representation is a written, audio or visual depiction of someone or something.

• Ideology is a system of beliefs that shape collective or personal views.

• Four methods (plan, tool, framework) of analysing representation:

  1. Image analyses: what can we overtly see?

  2. Narrative analyses

     • Who wins?

     • Protagonist/antagonist

     • What the protagonist learns/how they change

  3. Stylistic/formalist: aesthetics, "style"

  4. Ideological

• Theories: set views

• Structuralist: universal values

• Post-structuralist

  • social/cultural contexts

  • historical

  • viewed & lived experiences
