Week 2 Video Notes
Before the concept of surveillance capitalism, the rich were historically able to buy control of the media and influence through politicians. This was referred to as exerting power top-down.
Surveillance capitalism follows the business model of microtargeted advertising that tech titans have adopted, which uses data collected from websites we visit to create a profile of us as an individual, whether as a consumer or even a citizen.
These tech firms can sell the profiles of individuals to advertisers, companies, highest bidders, etc.
Microtargeted advertising allows tech firms to divide and conquer individuals.

Anti-trust laws have not been yet adapted to address microtargeted advertising, especially with cases to the extent of Facebook being able to track people as consumers and citizens at an individual level.
Banning microtargeting might be beneficial in controlling monopoly power and the partisan politics of today.
