Week 1 Reading 2
"Entrepreneurship for the creative and cultural industries"

Task: TASK: In your Learning Journal, draft a possible mission statement. You can use the prompts on page 42 as a guide.
Write out both your personal and professional mission statements.
List the goal you would like your business (or creative work) to achieve.
Describe how you would like to make the world better.
Week 1: Introductions
Tell us a little bit about yourself and what discipline you are studying. Include a link to a website that you find to be a great source of information &/or inspiration.
Ahoy! My name is Mitchel, I'm currently 18 years old and I'm currently in my second trimester of my Game Development course. I'm going for a Bachelor's Degree in Game Development.
I decided to come to SAE to develop my understanding on game development as a whole so I could both work in the games industry and make my own games. In the past, I have worked on personal projects using the Unity Engine, all of which were to just test what I could do with the skills I had. None of them came anywhere close to an actual game as they were just prototypes, but it showed that I had an interest in making games. The majority of the prototype games I created were first person games, the reason of which being that I admired the work of companies like Konami with their discontinued Silent Hills playable teaser (P.T.) or Capcom's more recent Resident Evil games (both of which are survival horror games).
See for yourself why these games are an inspiration for why I want to make games:
This was the best picture of me I could find.
Silent Hills P.T. (2014) by Konami [5]
Resident Evil 7 (2017) by Capcom [6]
I've also had a history of story-writing. I wrote stories that only my family read when I was probably around 9–10 years old. The completed stories I made include:
a man named Michael who, with the help of his scientist friend Dennis' time machine, gets lost throughout time and must find his way back to the present (with two whole sequels!);
a group of friends that learn of an old abandoned house, along with the myths of the house being haunted, and decide to explore inside the old house only to find more than what they bargained for; and
an awfully long hand-drawn Super Mario comic (emphasis on the "9–10 years old" part) with a plot that I can't quite remember in full.
While the pace of my story-writing hobby has definitely slowed down as time went on, that part of me has never left. I have been wanting to get back into story-writing and see just what I can do after all this time. I currently have a big idea for a story-writing project that I think, if I work on it, will be my biggest story yet (which is incredible considering the sheer size of my Super Mario comic. Seriously, that thing was like in the HUNDREDS of pages!). I have always wanted to improve this skill of mine and strive to be a better writer. I believe that writing is a great way to express one's creativity, just like with game-making.
I would love to get to know everyone in this class and be able to work with some on any upcoming projects that may come my way!
Week 1 Discussion: Curiosity or Confidence
In less than 100 words answer the following question. Do you think curiosity or confidence is the most important personality trait of an entrepreneur, and why? Read and respond to at least 1 other student's answer.
I think both are very important things for an entrepreneur to have as both work together to help them succeed, but I think confidence is the most important out of the two. This is because you must have the confidence to pursue your ideas even despite the very rocky rapids that might come along the way. Curiousity is good because it gives way to constructive thinking, but to actually take something that comes from that constructive thinking and make it go somewhere, you have to have the confidence to do what's necessary. You have to be confident in your idea.
Oh and by the way, it's spelt as "curiousity", not "curiosity". Only the silly Americans spell it like that ;)

What classmate Melissa Devlin wrote
I believe the most important trait in entrepreneurs is curiosity. Confidence is critical yes, but I think as an entrepreneur there are times when you will lose faith which is ok, but coming back to curiosity and opening up your mind, heart, eyes and ears to people, companies, products and communities needs again and again, the continued listening will result in an outcome being delivered that meets the right needs or right gap at the right time.
My response
I completely agree with this. I think something that is super important for an entrepreneur is for them to be able to move on from ideas that simply aren't going to work and strive to improve from those failed ideas and do even better things. It can be a hard thing to do so but that's just a part of being an entrepreneur, is overcoming the hardships of things such as your idea failing even though you thought it was great. Another important thing is, if an entrepreneur's idea fails, they should pay attention to why it failed and learn what they could do better for their next idea. Listening to good feedback is a key for success as you are listening to what the people want.
