In this brief, we are tasked with studying an entrepreneur from a list of known entrepreneurs and discussing what their chosen product is and all aspects of what the entrepreneur was going for and the road to success, such as the audience that was being targeted for the product, the hills and bumps that the entrepreneur in question encountered during their road to success with their product, and the current state of the products, among other things.
My chosen entrepreneur is Charles Adler (shown beside this text), founder of Kickstarter. In this brief, I am to create a video explaining how Charles Adler kickstarted Kickstarter (pun intended), who he was intended the product for and the challenges he met along the way.
(Startup Grind, 2014) [1]
As the name implies, this is the document that allows me to just dump all the information I find on my chosen person so that I can use it during the production of the main content of this brief.
I have created documents like this in the past as it helps me to keep track of everything such as the information for the brief itself, like the project deliveries and general overview of the brief, as well as the sources of information that I find on the chosen topic, and preparation for the main part of the brief such as, in this case, planning what sections will be in the video script.
This document is not expected for and is therefore not essential to the completion of the brief, but I prefer to utilize it nonetheless.
This is the slide deck in Google Slides that I will be using to present all of the information in the final video. Once the slides are created, I take screenshots of each slide and export them into my video editing software, where then add my voice-over recordings over them.
This is the final video I created, and the completed product for this brief.
In this video, I talk about Charles Adler, the co-founder of Kickstarter, as well as go into detail about what Kickstarter is and how it has impacted the creative industry as a whole.
Everything was put together by me.
How did it go?
First thing off the bat, this project was started way too late and therefore was completed like three weeks after the due date. What happened was I left this project to do my other stuff such as my weekly CIE152 pages and my GAD170 work, thinking that I would be able to come back to it near the due date and get it done within maybe a few days. I clearly underestimated just how much time this project would take to complete.
I spent the past couple of weeks working on this project, and I have been working on all three parts at once instead of sequentially. My method of doing the work was to complete the project in sections instead of completing each part on their own and moving to the next. I did this because I felt like this was a good way to work on the project as I felt like it was hitting four birds with one stone; making progress on the Information Dump Repository, video script, slide deck and video all at the same time. It also helps keep things more organized in my opinion and it also helped with procrastination, as I could just switch to another thing if I was stuck on one thing instead of just sitting there, wasting time as I try to think about how to proceed.
When I did the Information Dump Repository, I took inspiration from my brief 1 Brief Document where I not only wrote down my sources and the relevant information from those sources, but other things such as the project information from the Axis website and brief overview, preparation for what I'll do on the video script (planning out each section) etc, which I did for my brief 2 document in GIM110 last trimester. The consequence of doing all this instead of only just what is required for the brief is the extra time spent working on it, however I do think it's a fair trade-off as it's not only presented in a better way, but it also helped keeps things more organized during the production.
Looking over how I performed in this project, I immediately know one thing I could have done better, and that's to not underestimate the project and just do it with the given time I have. I really should not have left the project until the last week, as I could have spent the entire time doing this project before it was due and saved myself the deduction in grades because of the lateness of the project. Considering that this project—which was due in week 4—was submitted at the end of week 7, I think it goes to show that that kind of time and priority management simply does not work.
I think making the Information Dump Repository instead of just free-balling it and adding in the references in post while making the video was a good move. It helped with not only organization and keeping everything all in one place, but also time and effort. I think I saved more time and effort putting the sources into the Information Dump Repository as soon as I found them was a lot better than finding the sources, quoting them, and then going back and trying to find them again. It was also good to add the excerpts of the sources as well as it shows the relevant information, so I can just view it easily instead of having to go to the website and trying to find the information.
Well one thing I'll definitely know not to do in the future is underestimate a project, because for all I know, it could take anywhere between just a day of work to a bloody month to complete it. I will try to improve my time and priority management using this knowledge, which should allow me to not screw up like this again.
I will also continue to create the Information Dump Repositories or whatever the hell I'll call it in later research projects as it is very handy for the reasons already mentioned. I also like doing the cover pages and they look especially good in my learning journal, so that's another reason why I'll continue to create these documents in later projects.
