What makes a good leader?
Firstly, a good leader is someone who is humble. Unlike bad leaders, good leaders are full of humility, and not arrogant. They know that they are not the only important person in a team, believing in the power of interdependence over independence. Knowing this, good leaders are not afriad to learn from their teammates, and rarely think they know the most out of the entire team. Jens Hofma, the CEO of Pizza Hut UK, is known for working during shifts in busy Pizza Hut resaurants biweekly. This goes to prove that Jens Hofma is humble, willing to stoop himself down to the level of his employees, all for the purpose of understanding them more, and listening to their problems. Even though Jens Hofma doesn't say it directly, actions speak louder than words. Jens Hofma's actions just goes to show how important he views his employees, by making the effort to understand and listen to their problems. Naturally, humility in great leaders will make his teammates respect him, as teammates know that their leader is not self-obsessed, and actually believes in their value.
Secondly, good leaders are not afraid to praise achievements made by his teammates. Good leaders know the importance of morale, and the need to motivate his team. This form of "boosting morale" is done through the form of praising achievements, however small, from team members. In fact, according to a survey done by Socialcast, 69% of employees felt that they would work harder if their actions were better appreciated. By taking the time and effort to learn about the achievements of his team members and further praise them, it motivates team members as the praise by leaders will lead to a release of dopamine, making them feel good and working harder to crave more. Not only that, in the long term, teammates would be more loyal and respectful towards their leader, since the respect that their leader gives them ultimately leads to a two-way street whereby teammates start to gain respect for their leader.
Lastly, good leaders are great communicators. Good leaders know the importance of communication with his teammates, and openly communicate with his teammates. When leaders communicate transparently and proactively, team members can get a clear idea of the situation and brainstorm collectively, contributing to ideas. Clear communication thus leads to active listening, and many viewpoints are exchanged, leading to better-problem solving outcomes.
