At the Ranch, we met Liana, who gave us a tour around the property, which was full of lush wildlife along with an incredible view of the ocean. We learned about the way their environment works and what problems they were facing. After that, we had lunch and played some fun games in the open backyard behind one of the living houses. Then came the service portion of our experience, when we met E’o and Nico. These two women had such amazing insight and information about Hawaii as well as what their lives were like living there.
The first portion of our service started with weeding and clearing any plants that got in the way of what we wanted to achieve, a sustainable and healthy garden. This process involves a lot of team work. Some people picked weeds/plants and put them in wheel barrels while others wheeled the barrels down a small hill in order to empty them. Although this process was long and tough, we made it fun.
We met with E’o and Nico again and they split us up into groups. One group was in charge of planting a variety of flowers, fruit, and vegetables. Another group was in charge of scooping animal manure for fertilizer and placing it around the plants. The third group, my group, was in charge of stripping cardboard of its tape and placing it on top of the fertilizer in a way that made it so that the plants were still sticking out. After placing the card board down, we used a hose to wet it in order to prepare it for the final step, wood chipping. This process was the most fun.
Our team made a long assembly line leading from the wood chip pile to the garden. Four of us, including me, switched off between filling buckets with wood chips and handing them to the first person in the line. Those buckets were then passed all the way down the line to the garden and dumped on top of the cardboard. We even played telephone through the process, which made it very entertaining. After finishing the garden, E’o and Nico showed us around the rest of the ranch and allowed us to pick a couple of fruits and vegetables we may have wanted.
